Tracker vs immobiliser: what is the difference?
Both protect your vehicle, but they work in completely different ways. Here's a plain-English explanation of each, when you'd use them, and how they can work together.
In short: an immobiliser tries to stop your vehicle being driven away in the first place, while a tracker helps locate and recover it if it is taken. They solve different parts of the same problem, which is why many owners choose both.
What is a vehicle immobiliser?
An immobiliser is a device that prevents the engine from starting or the vehicle from being driven without the correct authorisation. Modern aftermarket immobilisers can require a unique PIN or tag before the car will move, which makes traditional theft methods — like key cloning or relay attacks — far harder to pull off.
The aim is prevention. If a thief can't drive the vehicle away, the theft often doesn't happen at all. The X-Series immobiliser is a good example of a dedicated immobilisation device.
What is a vehicle tracker?
A tracker is a device that monitors your vehicle's location. If the worst happens and the vehicle is stolen, a tracker helps a secure monitoring centre and the police locate and recover it. Higher-specification trackers also offer features such as driver recognition tags and alerts.
The aim here is recovery and monitoring. Trackers such as Scorpion S7, S5 and S5+ sit in this category, with different levels of protection to suit different vehicles and insurance requirements.
When is each one useful?
- Choose an immobiliser when your main goal is to stop the vehicle being taken in the first place — especially against relay and key-cloning theft.
- Choose a tracker when you want the reassurance of location monitoring and recovery support, or when your insurer asks for a specific tracking standard.
- Choose both for layered protection — prevent the theft where possible, and improve recovery chances if a vehicle is still targeted.
