DPF, EGR and AdBlue warning lights explained
These three systems are a common source of diesel warning lights. Here's what they do, why the warnings appear, and how diagnostics and support can help you understand the cause.
DPF, EGR and AdBlue are all part of a modern diesel vehicle's emissions and exhaust management systems. When a warning light appears, it usually means the vehicle has detected something it wants checked. The right first step is always diagnostics, not guesswork.
What is a DPF?
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) captures soot from the exhaust to reduce emissions. It periodically cleans itself in a process called regeneration. A DPF warning light often appears when regeneration hasn't completed properly — for example, after lots of short, low-speed journeys — or when the system detects a fault. Diagnostics help identify whether it's a driving pattern issue, a sensor problem or something that needs further attention.
What is the EGR system?
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system recirculates a portion of exhaust gas back into the engine to help reduce emissions. Over time, EGR components can become clogged or develop faults, which may trigger a warning light or affect how the engine runs. A diagnostic check helps pinpoint what the vehicle is reporting.
What is AdBlue (SCR)?
AdBlue is a fluid used by the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system on many modern diesels to reduce emissions. Warnings can appear when the AdBlue level is low, or when the system detects a fault. Sometimes the fix is simply topping up the fluid; other times a diagnostic investigation is needed to understand a stored fault.
Why do the warning lights appear?
- Incomplete DPF regeneration, often from short-journey driving.
- Sensor faults or readings outside expected ranges.
- Low AdBlue fluid level.
- Clogged or faulty EGR components.
- Related faults elsewhere that affect these systems.
Because several causes can produce a similar light, a proper diagnostic scan is the only reliable way to understand what's actually happening.
How we can help
We handle DPF, EGR and AdBlue enquiries as diagnostic and support services. That means reading fault codes, reviewing live data and advising on the likely cause and sensible next steps based on your vehicle and how it's used. See our DPF, EGR & AdBlue support page, or our wider diagnostics and tuning services, for what's involved.
Important
Vehicle-dependent and compliance checked
All services are subject to vehicle inspection, compatibility and compliance. We do not advertise illegal road-use emissions deletes. DPF, EGR and AdBlue enquiries are handled as diagnostic and support services, with advice based on the vehicle and intended use.
