Tuning guide
What to check before tuning your vehicle
Tuning works best on a healthy vehicle. Here's a simple checklist of the things that should be confirmed before any remap, so you get clean, reliable results.
A remap adds demand to your engine and drivetrain, so it's only sensible to start from a good baseline. The checks below protect both your vehicle and your investment, and help us give you honest, realistic advice.
1. Overall vehicle health
The starting point is a vehicle that's running as it should. Any rough running, misfires, warning lights or unusual noises should be investigated first. Tuning won't fix an underlying mechanical problem — it can make it more noticeable.
2. Fault codes and diagnostics
A diagnostic scan reads stored and active fault codes and lets us review live data. This tells us whether the vehicle is in a suitable state for tuning. If there are stored faults, we'll recommend resolving them first. You can read more in our guide to DPF, EGR and AdBlue warning lights.
3. Servicing and consumables
A recently serviced engine handles tuning far better. Before a remap, it's worth confirming:
- Engine oil and filter are in good condition and up to date.
- Air and fuel filters aren't overdue.
- Spark plugs (on petrol vehicles) are healthy.
- There are no fluid leaks or overdue service items.
4. Tyres
Extra performance is only useful if the car can put it down safely. Tyres should have good tread, even wear and correct pressures. Poor or mismatched tyres affect grip, handling and safety.
5. Clutch and gearbox condition
More torque means more strain on the transmission. On manual cars, a worn clutch may start to slip after tuning. On automatics, the gearbox should be in good health. We'll talk through what's suitable for your specific vehicle and how it's likely to cope.
6. Supporting hardware
A Stage 1 remap is designed for standard hardware, while higher stages need supporting upgrades. Knowing exactly what's fitted to your car helps us recommend the right route. If you're new to this, our guide on what a Stage 1 remap is is a good place to start, and our Stage 1 remap service page explains how we approach it.
7. Realistic expectations
Every vehicle responds differently. We give honest, vehicle-specific guidance rather than generic figures, so you know what to expect before any work begins. All tuning is subject to vehicle inspection, compatibility and compliance.
Important
Vehicle-dependent and compliance checked
All tuning services are subject to vehicle inspection, compatibility and compliance. We do not advertise illegal road-use emissions deletes. DPF, EGR and AdBlue enquiries are handled as diagnostic and support services, with advice based on the vehicle and intended use.
